On that day, in Jerez de la Fronteira, a dedication was written on the marker board of the Clinic:
 |
TO ALL MOTORCYCLE RIDERS, TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP HEROES, TO THE CENTAURS WHO LIVE REAL LIVES
BETWEEN THE IMMENSE "FOLLY OF DIONYSUS" AND
THE SPLENDID LIGHT OF APOLLO'S REASON
|
This writing is still there, on the mobile hospital's wall. The Mobile Clinic work has changed over the years. The Medical Centres, which according to the regulations must now be available at all World Championship circuits, have to deal with "emergencies" - with the most severely injured. Our role is to support the local doctors and hospitals: very badly injured riders are only treated directly by the Mobile Clinic in case of need. An example is provided by the Spanish rider Carlos Checa, injured in a crash at Donington in July 1998. His case plunged the entire world of motorcycling into the deepest anguish and produced this letter

All injuries outside emergencies: medium to high severity traumas, fractures which can be "functionally" treated, set and immobilised with Scotch-cast bandaging, are treated in the Mobile Clinic.
The Mobile Clinic is the small travelling hospital of motorcycle riders.
Journalists, mechanics, operators, specialists, team managers, workers, engineers, organisers, technicians: everybody can seek help and solace from the Mobile Clinic, (since 1997, the Mobile Clinic staff can be contacted round-the-clock during Grand Prix days). The Mobile Clinic offers the same level of assistance as the casualty department of a "good hospital".
It is especially the riders who want the Mobile Clinic to be "always there". They consider it "THEIRS".
Why is that?
Motorcycle riders race against nature's limits. In this enterprise, they encounter serious risks and dangers. Every year, an incredibly high number of riders crash during practice or races. The number of falls almost invariably exceeds 500. The riders bend to graze the tarmac, in open defiance of all laws of nature and sometimes, they crash.
Statistically, the number of rider referrals to hospitals by ambulance is very low (4-5 a year). This figure clearly indicates that most of the injuries suffered by the riders are treated by the Mobile Clinic staff. Virtually all World Championship riders have visited the little travelling hospital of motorcycling, sooner or later, either on their own or accompanied by somebody.
