DESMOWOMEN IN THE SADDLE -3-
A longtime fan of motorcycling -- of Ducati motorbikes in particular -- in 1990 Maria Luisa Blandino took part in several Ducati meets organized by Ducati Pompone Italia, the only club for Ducati fans Italy and Europe. Maurizio Bavaresco, president and animator of Ducati Pompone Italia, known to all as Mister Pompone, gave Luisa the name of “Lady Ducati” because of her original personality. A year later, Lady Ducati set up a small group of motorcyclists taking the name “Pompone Lady Ducati” and in 1993 organized the first meet at Colle del Lys outside Turin. In 1999, Lady Ducati accepted the offer to become a Ducati Official Club and changed the name into LadyDucatiDoc.

Do you ride a motorcycle?

I’ve ridden many, but because of my height, I don’t ride big-displacement bikes.

When did you start and what bike do you ride now? Have you always been the rider?

I started very early on, but I don’t ride much anymore. I’ve covered many kilometers on the back seat too.

What was it about Ducati that ignited your passion?

The sound of the exhaust pipes.

How long have you been president of a DOC club?

Since its founding.

What propelled you to found a club, or rather, how did you become president of a DOC club?

I was offered the opportunity. I had already organized the Lady Ducati Meet, an idea that stemmed from a desire to see lots of Ducatis in one day. Pure, unbridled passion.

Did you encounter any particular difficulties. How were you received?

The biggest obstacle is dealing with members who are always tired, have little practical sense, are poor organizers, lack ideas and have no spirit of sacrifice. It’s hard to obtain collaboration, which is a characteristic of the Piedmontese.

How many women are in your club?

Right now, about ten. Too few, too indifferent, too passive.

Is it an experience that you would suggest to all Desmo women? Why?

If you don’t feel it instinctively, the passion is difficult to transmit. Everyone ends up in the shadow of a man. But it opens up roads, gives a chance to meet new people and take on new challenges. At 50 years old, I had the occasion, actually the need, to learn English and use a PC.

Did it give you a special sense of satisfaction?

Infinite, unforgettable, unique. I had the opportunity to meet unique, incredible people who had the talent to do things beyond human capability. Real men, that is.

Can you relate an episode that you hold dear as president of a DOC club?

There are so many. Here’s one: in the Ducati stands at Mugello 2005, I was asked to sign an autograph even though I had never won a GP. I have never designed motorcycles but I live only out of my simple passion.
