Dress well, travel with no cares: Ducati safety ambassador

Bikers are the category of road users most exposed to dangers: from the weather conditions to the risks of riding in traffic it's important to understand that special bike wear is an essential form of protection. Ducati has always been a safety ambassador, and in the development of its own technical clothing collection it has again fully committed itself to this objective, taking advantage of collaborations with some of the market leaders. The development of a technical garment must guarantee three main characteristics: protection in the event of a collision, ergonomics for the best interaction between rider and bike, and comfort for maximum freedom of movement.

Protection of the head and face: helmets - The helmets in the Ducati collection have complied with the European and international approved standards for years: they have a composite fibre outer shell which ensures high protection in the event of an impact, and an inner shell that absorbs and dissipates the force of the impact. The synergy between the shells is crucial both for safety reasons and in order to pass the tests for approval. Among the essential components of the helmet, the visor must guarantee a clear view, while the strap must keep the helmet firmly attached. Finally, ventilation, which is indispensable to ensure the right circulation of air. The helmet is subject to wear and tear so it is recommended that it is changed every five years; in the event of an impact it must, however, always be replaced.

Protection of the body: jackets, trousers, gloves and boots - The garments worn by the biker offer significant protection but not only that: they also protect against sudden changes in temperature and adverse weather conditions. According to a study carried out by MAIDS , wearing technical garments makes it possible to reduce the effects should an accident occur. The MAIDS statistics are summarised in an indicator, called the protection factor, which shows the percentage of accidents analysed in which the protective equipment lessened the severity of injuries or prevented them.

The jacket is chosen according to its use and the weather conditions in which you intend to use it. The Ducati collection offers a wide selection of garments in both leather and fabric, designed to offer the best protection and the maximum comfort. It's important to know that for light or medium weight fabric garments (e.g. cotton, denim, light leather or nylon), the protection factor is 69%, while for heavier materials such as leather or para-aramid fibre, it goes up to 92%.
Trousers must be comfortable and at the same time fit closely so as to keep the protectors in the correct position. Here again, the protection factor varies from 65% for light/medium weight materials to 96% for heavier ones.

Jackets and trousers can be fitted with special protectors, such as the back guard or chest guard, to increase safety in the event of an accident. The protectors are effective in preventing bruises, fractures and damage to muscles and joints if an impact occurs.

Gloves must ensure mobility and grip for full control of the vehicle. They must be a good fit when in the riding position, with a closed fist, and completely cover the hands and wrists. They score a very high protection factor: for the heavy ones injuries are cut by up to 95%.
Boots protect the feet, ankles and lower part of the shinbones: they must be rigid and hard to penetrate, resist abrasion and ensure comfort and ergonomics. All the boots in the Ducati collection have certification and are equipped with polyurethane or metal protectors to ensure better protection. Footwear specifically for bikes is considered as personal protective equipment, has EC certification under European standard EN 13634 and scores a protection factor of 93%.

Ducati has undertaken, as from its 2015 collection, to provide certification for some of its technical garments, already characterised by a high standard of protection, to guarantee all Ducatisti state-of-the-art products with a high level of safety.
