Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech and Wayne Maxwell dominate Morgan Park

Boost Mobile Racing With K-Tech rider Wayne Maxwell secured victory in both races as well as securing Pole Position for the perfect weekend at round five of the ASBK Championship over the weekend of 5-7 August.

Despite a disrupted Friday practice due to rain, Wayne, and the Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R were able to secure a valuable championship point with another pole position, his third of the year, completing the fastest ever motorcycle lap of the Morgan Park Circuit during the Q2 session.

Race one of the got underway with Wayne having to play second fiddle to a fast-starting Lachlan Epis, however Wayne was able to dive down the inside at turn ten on the first lap of the sixteen-lap race to take the lead and begin to build a buffer over the chasing pack. At the completion of lap one the gap was just on .5 of a second, by lap four it was two seconds. Championship leader Mike Jones had moved into second place on lap five and began to slowly claw back Wayne’s nearly 2.5 second lead. By half race distance the gap was still over 1.7 seconds, from lap five to thirteen Wayne’s lap times only differed by half a second ensuring the gap over Jones remained around the one second mark. By lap fourteen Jones had begun to reduce the buffer and as they started lap fifteen the advantage had evaporated. Wayne and the Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R rose to the occasion, the Pirelli tyres and K-Tech suspension working in harmony to ensure Wayne had blinding pace through the fastest and bumpiest section the track to not allow Jones any opportunity to overtake, taking the win by .195 of a second.

Air temperature had dropped slightly by the time the field took to the grid for race two, but Wayne was on fire and even more determined to put the Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R on the top step of the podium again. Wayne got a good start, but it was Mike Jones who led the field as they negotiated turn one for the first time, Wayne right on his tail in second position. The Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R rider was happy to sit in second until the beginning of lap seven making a bid for the lead at turn one. Halfway around on lap same lap Troy Herfoss surged into second place relegating Jones to third at turn six. Able sit with Wayne for a lap Herfoss made a bid for the lead at turn four with a late braking lunge on lap ten. Jones was also able to shuffle past relegating Wayne to third place with five and a half laps to go. By the end of the next lap Jones had hit the lead as Herfoss’s soft rear tyre was starting run out of grip, Wayne made the pass at turn one on lap twelve to attempt to claw back the .8 second lead Jones held. Uncorking his fastest lap of the race on lap thirteen Wayne and the Boost Mobile Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R closed the gap and Wayne made the race winning overtake on the last lap at the fastest, bumpiest section of the track to the take his second win of the weekend by .574.

Pole position and two race wins ensured round victory and an eleven-point reduction in Mike Jones Championship lead with two rounds and five races remaining.

The next round of the 2022 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship Presented by Motul is at Victoria’s Phillip Island over the weekend of Queensland’s Morgan Park over the weekend of 18-20 November.

“The team gave me the ultimate package this weekend” commented round winner Wayne Maxwell. “That second race was one of the toughest I have been in, Mike is so fast around here, he led at the start but there were some sections where our bike was so good and that was in sector two and the fast section down the hill. Adrian my Engineer did a great job with the setup through there and that allowed me to make that move in race two. I really appreciated the effort that everyone in the team and all our sponsors put in this weekend to allow us to get this result and get some points for the championship.”

“This is the weekend we have been trying to achieve all year” said Team Manager Craig McMartin. “It has been a tough start to the year but to finally get the perfect weekend is a great feeling. I have to thank the entire team for their hard work, not only this round, but all year, just never giving up and always pushing for this result. A big thank you too to all our sponsors for their continued support. Wayne rode exceptionally well all weekend and was rock solid in both races.”
