Desmo250

Desmo250 engine

A 249.7 cc four-stroke single-cylinder with desmodromic timing: an engine designed to rev up to 15,000 rpm and fully exploit every gear, reducing the need to shift. Magnesium covers for the alternator, cylinder head, and clutch help contain the weight and make the bike even more responsive.

The benefits of Desmo

The Desmo250 MX engine is a 249.7 cc four-stroke single-cylinder with desmodromic DOHC four-valve timing. Chain-driven, it is equipped with lightweight magnesium covers for the alternator, cylinder head, and clutch. Thanks to desmodromic timing, the engine can rev up to 15,000 rpm, a benchmark value for the category, offering greater rev extension during launch. The absence of traditional valve springs enables more precise valve control, reducing friction and maximising racing performance. More revs, more power, more chance of taking the holeshot.

A wider and more consistent torque curve

Thanks to the desmodromic system, which allows for the management of higher valve acceleration, it is possible to achieve greater lift than with conventional systems and thus enable more aggressive cam profiles without increasing valve diameter. This improves cylinder filling efficiency and contributes to a broader, more consistent torque curve throughout the entire rev range.

On the Desmo250 MX, desmodromic timing allows for a maximum engine speed of 15,000 rpm, an absolute benchmark for the category, without compromising the quality of power delivery. In addition, the absence of traditional valve springs reduces internal friction in the valvetrain, allowing the engine to deliver greater torque at low and mid revs and ensuring a more immediate and efficient response across every riding phase.

Desmodromic timing: efficiency and reliability

Bore and stroke measurements of 81 x 48.4 mm match those of the Panigale V4 R from which this engine inherits its most sophisticated solutions, while using fully revised geometries, masses and fluid dynamics to respond to the specific needs of motocross. The extremely light piston is equipped with a compression ring and oil scraper, with a box in box piston architecture to combine stiffness and resistance, reducing the thrust surfaces with the ultimate goal of minimising friction. For the same reason, the piston pin features a DLC surface coating. The crankshaft is pressed-up, while the connecting rod is monolithic.

Confirming the technological link to the Panigale V4 R, the engine adopts the same valves and rockers arms as the Ducati sports bike.

The titanium intake valves measure 34 mm in diameter, while the 27.5 mm exhaust valves are made of steel. The system is completed with a hydraulically actuated chain tensioner that ensures more precise timing control than a conventional mechanical solution, for more consistent performance and reliability over time.

Predictive maintenance

Drawing on experience gained by Ducati Corse in Superbike and MotoGP, this predictive maintenance system moves beyond a traditional maintenance concept based on fixed intervals. A dedicated algorithm constantly monitors engine operating parameters and conditions of use, calculating engine stress levels in real time while also considering terrain type.

Based on this information, the system progressively updates an engine wear indicator and establishes service intervals, visible via the Ducati X-Link App. In this way, the scheduling of maintenance is adjusted in line with actual motorcycle usage, with shorter intervals for professional or particularly intense use, and longer intervals in the case of amateur MX riding.

If engine stress measurements fall below the benchmark, the algorithm automatically extends the service intervals, optimising management costs without compromising on reliability and performance.

Desmo250 MX maintenance is split into two types of service, MID and FULL. The MID Service includes a valve clearance check, to be carried out after every 45 hours of use, and piston replacement, with intervals varying between 45 and 60 hours depending on actual usage. The FULL Service, which involves a complete engine overhaul, is scheduled between 90 and 120 hours of use, again based on the actual usage conditions and stress levels recorded by the system.

Four-valve DOHC

The Desmo250 adopts a DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) configuration with four valves, developed to optimise airflow and combustion efficiency. A technical solution that guarantees immediate engine response and improved power delivery at all engine speeds. Fuelling is managed by a Ø 44 mm Mikuni throttle body, designed to provide a direct and precise response, while the steel and aluminium exhaust system with resonator ensures maximum performance, while conforming with 2025 FIM/FMI international race standards (109 dB + 2 dB of tolerance).

Noise emissions

The exhaust, complete with resonator and produced in a steel and aluminium mix, complies with 2025 FIM/FMI standards, which impose an exhaust noise limit of no more than 109 dB with a 2 dB tolerance.
