HomeThe Brands Hatch finale once again served up plenty of drama as the British Superbike Championship reached its conclusion. Leon Haslam finished the first Superbike race in seventh on Saturday but crashed out in the penultimate race in tricky conditons on Sunday afternoon, bringing his season to a premature end. But his form over the season, which included a win at the opening round at Oulton Park, saw him finish his first season with the Moto Rapido Racing team in third place overall.
In the Supersport class, Ben Currie kept his championship hopes alive until the very end. He rode brilliantly in Saturday’s Sprint race and was unlucky to finish off the podium after leading, and went into Sunday’s final Feature race with a twelve-point deficit. Another fantastic ride saw him take his sixth win of the season, but sadly he lost out on the title to Rhys Irwin by just four points.
Leon Haslam (Moto Rapido Racing #91)
British Superbike Championship – 3rd
"It was a weird crash and nothing to be gained from that last race. I’ve a bit of a shoulder injury but nothing too major. It’s been a consistent year with lots of podiums and a few wins. Let’s roll into next year. I think the biggest thing is a second year together with the team. And Ducati are always pushing the bar, the new bike’s double-sided swingarm should give us lots more edge grip and I’ll be glad to be on it next year."
Ben Currie (Moto Rapido Racing #61)
British Supersport Championship – 2nd
"Bittersweet moment at Brands Hatch. I came here with one intention, to win the British Championship. I think we made ourselves proud. Tried my hardest in both races, just missed out on the win on Saturday, which made things a little more difficult for Sunday as I dropped some points. But I gave that last race everything and finished it with a win.
If Saturday was a little bit different maybe we would have taken home the spoils, but not to be. But I’m proud of my efforts, I’m proud of the team’s efforts and now we have a long pre-season to reflect on our achievements. Another awesome finish in the championship overall, another top three in the championship, six wins, I think we can be pretty proud."
Steve ‘Wilf’ Moore - Team Owner / Crew Chief
"It was a weekend of highs and lows. Starting with the highs, because that’s the fun bit, Ben rode amazingly well in that last race. He was absolutely just determined to win the race no matter what, and see how the championship panned out behind him. Couldn’t ask for more than that, he absolutely did his job.
Leon got unlucky with the race this morning. But if you’re going to make an omelette, a big expensive Italian omelette, then you’ve got to break some big expensive Italian eggs haven’t you. And that’s what we did.
Leon had an injury from the Race 2 crash. He said to me from the medical centre that “I’m ok to ride, don’t worry, get the bike fixed.” So, the guys started working on the bike, we could have got it fixed. But Leon returned to the garage with a bit of a sore shoulder, so I poked it. He screamed, so I said, “that’s it, there’s no way you can race.” He was determined to race so that’s always a good sign. But we decided to call it a day with Leon already having secured third in the championship with no chance of getting second or losing third. It was a sensible decision to rest him the final race.
Overall, for a small, dealer-based team to finish third in the British Superbike Championship and second in the British Supersport Championship, the two premium classes, is something I’m exceptionally proud of. I can’t thank the team enough. Everybody works so hard, late nights, no days off, absolutely full commitment, every team member doing two- or three-people’s jobs. It shows how good they are. It’s been epic for this year. I’m happy overall. It’s a shame to end with an injured rider and a broken bike, but we also have trophies and Ben's win. I’m super happy and we’ll be back next year.”
Ian ‘Hammy’ Darbyshire - Team Manager
"A really good year. When we look back from the previous one, we would probably have taken the results as it’s finished this season. Some moments of feeling sadness and a little bit hard done by, but me and Wilf have just had a chat and agreed that for a small team we certainly punch above our weight. In terms of the year and how it’s finished, we didn’t win it. But we certainly feel we’ve done everyone justice, including Ducati and all our sponsors. Personally, from me to the team, I couldn’t stand back-to back with a better bunch of guys and I look forward to next year."
