At the edge of the world: a journey through fjords and volcanoes

After arriving on the island and spending the first night in Reykjavík, the journey begins to discover the most authentic Iceland. We leave the world's northernmost capital to immerse ourselves in the unspoiled nature of Hvalfjörður fjord – the “whale fjord” – traveling along the old road that has been forgotten since the construction of the underwater tunnel. The mountains are reflected in the calm waters of the fjord, creating iridescent reflections that change with the light of day.

Continue north, entering the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula, where Snæfellsjökull National Park was established in 2001. The coastline winds its way between golden beaches, cliffs populated by seals and seabirds, and bizarrely shaped lava fields, shaped by the slow cooling of magma.

Along the route, you pass beneath the famous Kirkjufell, the perfectly shaped mountain that is reflected in the waters of the fjord and which, with its harmonious silhouette, has become one of the island's most iconic symbols.

At the tip of the peninsula stands the majestic Snæfellsjökull ice cap volcano (1,446 m), immortalized by Jules Verne as the gateway to Journey to the Center of the Earth. A place where time seems to stand still and nature reveals all its primordial power.

The beginning of a journey through land, ice, and sea: a perfect prelude to discovering the island of volcanoes.

The northern island

The journey continues towards the northeast of the island, along the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The road runs alongside landscapes sculpted by the wind and sea, until it reaches Ytri Tunga beach, where you can encounter the first colonies of seals basking on the rocks.

Continuing north, the landscape becomes increasingly wild. You cross fjords and silent valleys until you reach Hólmavík, the “village of witches,” a place steeped in legends and mysteries linked to Icelandic magic. Skirting the Húnafjörður fjord, the route finally leads to Sauðárkrókur, where you spend the night immersed in the tranquility of the north.

The next morning, the journey continues with a visit to the Glaumbær Folk Museum, a fascinating complex of ancient Viking dwellings built from wood, rock, and turf. Here, time seems to have stood still, and the atmosphere is accompanied by the aroma of freshly baked pastries, which can be enjoyed in one of the museum's small kitchens.

We then travel up the Skagafjörður fjord, past green pastures and Icelandic horses, until we reach the picturesque fishing village of Siglufjörður for lunch, where colorful boats reflect peacefully in the harbor water.

In the afternoon, after a transfer of about 100 kilometers, you arrive at the charming town of Akureyri, nestled on the Eyjafjörður fjord, the second largest on the island. A pleasant stroll through its flower-filled center allows you to discover its serene and welcoming atmosphere before setting off again for one of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders: the spectacular Goðafoss waterfall, which, with its horseshoe shape, unleashes all the power and grace of Icelandic nature.

From the power of waterfalls to the silence of fjords

The journey continues along Iceland's famous Diamond Ring, an itinerary offering breathtaking landscapes and unique natural wonders. The route begins with the stunning boiling mud pools and fumaroles of Námaskarð, where the ground bubbles beneath your feet and the air is thick with sulfur. You then visit the Krafla volcano, dominated by its striking blue lake, and continue on to the impressive Dettifoss waterfall, known as the “powerful waterfall”: with a drop of 45 meters and an average flow of 500 m³/s, it is the most powerful in Europe.

The journey continues north, with a stop at Ásbyrgi Canyon, a spectacular horseshoe-shaped formation, and the nearby Tjörnes peninsula, just a few kilometers from the Arctic Circle. Continuing along the coast, you reach the charming fishing village of Húsavík.

From here, the road leads us into the Ódáðahraun desert, a lunar landscape where nothingness seems infinite and shades of brown, gray, and black stretch as far as the eye can see. Continuing inland, we visit the village of Möðrudalur, where, with a little luck, we may catch a glimpse of the shy Arctic foxes. After the desert, the journey descends into the Jökuldalur glacial valley until it reaches Egilsstaðir, the main town in the east.

In the afternoon, we cross the fascinating Öxi pass, then descend towards the coast and travel along the famous East Fjords, a succession of picturesque villages, mountains overlooking the sea, and quiet bays that seem suspended in time.

An intense day, among volcanoes, rushing waterfalls, lunar deserts, and spectacular coastlines, revealing all the variety and power of Iceland's landscapes.

Towards the South: between glaciers and geysers

The day is dedicated to discovering Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and its spectacular surroundings. The first stop is at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you can sail among the icebergs and watch the seals playing among the ice blocks. Not far away is Diamond Beach, the black beach where icebergs carried from the lagoon are deposited by the tide, creating a unique and evocative setting.

The route continues to Skaftafell National Park, where the glacier reveals itself in all its majesty. Immediately afterwards, you reach the famous black beach of Reynisfjara, renowned for its imposing columnar basalt formations.

The next stop is the Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve, home to numerous species of seabirds, including the distinctive puffin. The journey continues to the foot of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. You will then visit some of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls: Skógafoss, 60 meters high, Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the waterfall, and Gullfoss, the beautiful “golden waterfall.”

The tour then enters the Geysir Nature Reserve, where the Strokkur geyser erupts jets of water about 30 meters high every 3-5 minutes. The last stop is Þingvellir National Park, the “assembly plain,” where you can walk between tectonic plates to the historic site of Althing, the oldest parliament in the world, founded in 930 AD.

The following day, the return flight brings an adventure of ice and fire to a close. Iceland remains behind us, but its wild spirit, the north wind, and the roar of the waterfalls will live on in the memories of those who have traveled through it.
