GP of Japan. Bagnaia concludes Friday free practice at Motegi in second place. Michele Pirro twentieth

Francesco Bagnaia secured a spot directly into Q2 of the Grand Prix of Japan as he closed Friday's free practice in second place.

After struggling in the last GP in India, Pecco and his crew spent today's sessions to find a solution that would enable him to regain the right feeling, especially under braking, with his Desmosedici GP. After closing FP1 in P4, in the final minutes of the afternoon session, Bagnaia put on a soft tyre for the time attack and made a massive improvement with a time of 1'43.518, just a fraction away from the new outright circuit record set today by Binder (KTM).

After returning to the Motegi track for the first time since 2012, Michele Pirro struggled more today as he was still suffering with his ankle injured at the San Marino GP. The rider from San Giovanni Rotondo ended in P20 (1:45.866), meaning that he will also have to go through Q1 tomorrow.

Francesco Bagnaia (#1 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 2° (1:43.518)
"Finally, I found the way to be back on the top. it was a long time that I was not fast on a Friday, so I'm happy about that and happy for the step at the front that I did in terms of braking. Now, I can push again like I was doing before. We're still missing something. I'm not completely happy, but I have to say that we're really close to sorting things out. I managed to improve cornering, which in the last GPs has always been difficult for me because the bike always tended to take me a little wide. I am happy that we've identified what the problem was. Now, we'll just have to see tomorrow what will happen, but I'm quite sure that with a bike like this, I can fight for the top positions."

Michele Pirro (#51 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 20° (1:45.866)
"After not coming to this track for ten years, at least it is cooler here than in India! I'm still struggling and a bit too far away from being in a good condition, but I hope tomorrow I can make another improvement step, seeing as today I didn't use painkillers for the pain in my leg and ankle, and I hope to be a bit better."

The Ducati Lenovo Team will be out on track again at the Mobility Resort Motegi on Saturday morning for the second free practice session at 10.10 in Japan (03.10 CEST), while Q1 and Q2 follow shortly after at 10.50 (03.50). The afternoon's 12-lap Sprint race is scheduled to get underway at 15.00 local time (08.00).
