The route took me over the Jama and San Francisco mountain passes, climbing to nearly 4,800 metres, with long sections above 4,200 metres, through freezing temperatures, strong winds, snow and more than 480 km of complete isolation, with no fuel stations or support facilities. It was a demanding challenge that required preparation, respect and determination, rewarded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in South America. Yet the most memorable moment had nothing to do with altitude. It happened in San Pedro de Atacama, where, after travelling thousands of kilometres, I met my daughter, who had travelled there to watch a meteor shower on her birthday. Just a few hours together, in the middle of the world's driest desert, gave the journey an entirely new meaning. Because in the end, it is not only the roads that make an adventure unforgettable, but also the people we meet along the way.
